The School Board of Brevard County, Florida met in regular session on Tuesday, January 18, 2011, at the Educational Services Facility, 2700 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, Viera, Florida. Notice of the meeting was advertised in The Eagle newspaper on Thursday, January 13, 2011. The affidavit of publication with a copy of the ad attached is filed in the Affidavit File in the Board Office.

Chairman Murray asked for a moment of silence for Tyler Kowalczyk, 2nd Grade student from Sherwood Elementary; Cynthia Cochran, Media Specialist from Stone Middle School; Marvin Smithson, father of School Board Member Karen Henderson; and John Sprinkle Jr., father-in-law of School Board Member Andy Ziegler. who passed away unexpectedly.

Southwest Middle School Vocal Ensemble, under the direction of Chorus Director Andrea Boley, entertained the Board and the viewing audience prior to the start of the meeting, and played one additional musical number.

Chairman Murray took this opportunity to thank Ms. Boley and her students for entertaining the Board.

7. Recognition of Robert L. Jordan

Minutes: 

Chairman Murray recognized Boy Scout Troop 362 who were in attendance to observe communication and public debate.

Chairman Murray took this opportunity to thank Robert Jordan for his eight years of service as a School Board Member of Brevard Public Schools and for his leadership throughout the community.

Mr. Jordan said a few closing remarks about his time on the Board and the future of Brevard Public Schools.

Dr. Binggeli thanked Mr. Jordan for all that he has done and stated that it was a journey of service.

8. 2010 School Related Employee of the Year

Minutes: 

Dr. Binggeli, on behalf of the School Board of Brevard, recognized Jody Scott, Office Clerk at Eau Gallie High School as the 2010 Brevard Public Schools Employee of the Year.  Ms. Scott has been employed at the district for 19 years, all at Eau Gallie High School. She was formally recognized at the Employee of the Year awards breakfast held on December 10, 2010 at the Holiday Inn in Viera, Florida.

Ms. Scott along with the five finalist (noted on the agenda) were presented with a clock and congratulated by Chairman Murray and Dr. Binggeli.

9. Spotlight on Education

Minutes: 

Dr. Binggeli welcomed Cocoa High's Culinary Program under the direction of Chef Instructor, Harvey Knight. Before turning over the meeting to Chef Knight, Dr. Binggeli commented on how delicious the food that these students have made since he recently had the opportunity to sample the wares.

Chef Knight  introduced several of his culinary students and showed a brief video of what the students are learning in the Culinary Arts Program at Cocoa High School. The students presented to each Board Member a French bread that they made as a gift.

14. Recognize Brevard County Sheriff's Department for their Contribution

Minutes: 

Dr. Binggeli took this opportunity to recognize Brevard County Sheriff's Department for their donation of 50 laptop computers to Brevard Schools Foundation's Take Stock in Children program.

Dr. Binggeli introduced Lt. Todd Maddox, Brevard County Sheriff, and Marilyn Fashano, Director of Programs and Events for Brevard Schools Foundation.

Ms. Fashano stated that Sheriff Jack Parker, Lt. Todd Maddox and Sgt. Joanna Seigal have been a partner with Take Stock in Children for the past eleven years. She mentioned that the gently used laptops will be donated to deserving high school seniors who will be attending college in the fall.

Ms. Fashano presented Lt. Maddox with a certificate and he said few words on behalf of Sheriff Jack Parker.

She also stated that the Board would not respond to issues this evening but the Superintendent would investigate the concerns and respond in a timely manner. Mr. Ziegler congratulated Heritage High School Marching Band for entertaining at the Extreme Makeover Home Addition.

Mr. Ziegler recognized Angela Handa for accepting the advisory position for the Superintendent's Insurance Advisory Committee. He noted that his previous appointee moved to Tampa, Florida.

Mr. Ziegler gave an update on the League of Cities. He congratulated Mayor Hal Rose, City of West Melbourne, who is now the current President of the League of Cities. He is also a teacher at Hoover Middle School.

Mr. Ziegler noted that he met with Thad Altman and Rich Workman regarding education and the pros and cons of vouchers.

Mr. Ziegler suggested that the schools seek volunteers (Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, ROTC, etc.) to raise the flags on specified holidays. He also suggested that the volunteer can pick up the flag at the school  the day prior to the holiday and take them down that evening then return the flag to the school the following morning.

Mr. Ziegler requested the Board accept the offer from Rolling Thunder to receive the MIA/POW flags to be flown at our schools along with the United States flag.

The Board and Dr. Binggeli agreed with the suggestion and would pass the information along to the building principals so arrangements can be made.

Ms. Kneessy shared an inspiring story regarding Mrs. Wendy Wayne, a teacher that went and beyond the call of duty.

Ms. Henderson gave and update on the Central Florida School Boards Coalition meeting. She stated that the Board should have received the Federal and State Priorities and a presentation regarding revenues from advertising.

Ms. Henderson noted that they brought up a water conservation project in which Dr. Binggeli  would have Ed Curry, Assistant Superintendent of Facilities, look into. Dr. Binggeli stated that he has nothing to report at this time.

Ms. Henderson noted that she was at the Extreme Home Makeover site several times with her daughters since they were a part of the school news teams and got to participate in the event. She mentioned that she would like to know how much the bus got filled with school supplies for the students of Brevard Public Schools.

Dr. Krupp noted that he attended the Extreme Makeover Pep Rally at Kennedy Space Center. He also thanked the Heritage High School Band for their performance.

Dr. Krupp noted that he toured the North Area Bus Compound and their portable city.

Dr. Krupp noted that he attended the Kickoff meeting of the First Robotics Competition Presentation of the new game with a mini bot. He congratulated Melbourne High School for being eligible for hosting the meeting.

Dr. Krupp stated that he visited Titusville High School, Jackson Middle School, and Astronaut High School and met with the principals of each school.

Dr. Krupp noted that he met with Cyndi Van Meter, Associate Superintendent of Curriculum & Instruction, regarding eBooks and relayed that Clearwater High School gave a Kindle to each of the 2200 students and discussed whether Brevard is looking into eBooks with the Race to the Top Grant since it is for technology.

Dr. Murray noted that eBooks was the wave of the future and had that same discussion with an educator in the Midwest.

Dr. Murray noted that she also attended the Extreme Home Makeover and saw a lot of people volunteering to help support the community.

Dr. Murray noted that Brevard Continuum of Care from the Brevard County Housing and Human Services Department is conducting a census for the homeless and they are asking for donations of white t-shirts and socks. The contact is Tammy Harris.

Dr. Murray reminded the Board and the community of the All-County Band and Choral Concerts and encouraged the Board to attend a few of them. She mentioned the unbelievable talent out students exhibit.

Dr. Murray thanked again the Cocoa Culinary Arts students and Chef Knight for the goodies that were provided and the exceptional program in our schools.

Minutes: 

Dr. Binggeli took this opportunity to mention several events that he attended. He framed this by stating the incredible opportunities the students of Brevard have access to.

Dr. Binggeli noted that he attend, along with Dr. Krupp the First Robotics Kick off at Melbourne High School. They were greatly pleased to find out the Melbourne High School was the only school in America that has the honor and responsibility to provide the kick off experience.

Dr. Binggeli noted that he attended the Florida Music Educators Conference. He mentioned the reason that he attended was because for two days in a row, Brevard Schools, Brevard Teachers, and Brevard Administrators, were being recognized for their exemplary opportunities for children in music.

Dr. Binggeli committed to the Board that even with the challenging times ahead the district will continue to do the best that we can to bring opportunities to the students of Brevard. He mentioned how proud he was on what he had the opportunity to witness at these two events.
