Agenda Item #46
Consultant Agreement:Growing Up Writing
Elementary Programs would like to contract Connie Dierking, author and writing consultant, for a four-hour presentation specifically designed to support kindergarten writing instruction. Connie Dierking's book, Growing Up Writing, will be the featured publication. Using oral storytelling, implementing a writing workshop and crafting mini-lessons are the objectives for this Saturday workshop (Sunshine State Standard LA.K.3.2.1).
Following the workshop, the teachers will be required to create a lesson based on the information shared by Ms. Dierking and present that lesson to their class. The lesson will be reviewed by the coordinators of the workshop, Blair Nave and Theresa Phelps. Impact on students performance will be measured by comparing the February 10th district writing assessment (before the workshop) to the next and final district assessment in April.
Connie Dierking conducts workshops throughout the United States. In addition to Growing Up Writing, Ms. Dierking has also co-authored Teaching Writing Skills with Children's Literature and Literature Models to Teach Expository Writing. Ms. Dierking currently serves as the Regional Coordinator for Reading First Professional Development in Pinellas County and a writing demonstration teacher for Pinellas County Schools.
Consultant fees are $500 for a half day (four hours) plus lodging, meals, and mileage expenses ($350). This Saturday workshop targets kindergarten teachers, writing contacts, and reading coaches. Maximum seating is 100. The proposed budget for this training is $850.
Approve the contract service agreement between Elementary Programs and Connie Dierking, author and writing consultant, for Saturday, February 21, 2009.
