Agenda Item #30
Safe Schools/Healthy Schools Grant
The Safe Schools/Healthy Schools grant from the US DOE Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools will focus on comprehensive prevention and intervention services to reduce and eliminate violence, victimization, use of drugs/alcohol/tobacco while building student resiliency skills and pro-social behaviors. Funds support professional development, activities, curricula, programs, and services. Schools with high numbers of incidents will be selected to participate in this program supported through a partnership of law enforcement, community mental health, and juvenile justice agencies.
Funding is estimated at $2.25 million each year for 4 years. Cash match is not required. Submission deadline is expected in March 2009. A project coordinator will be hired with grant funds and assisted by resource teachers and contact persons at each selected school.
The district received this grant in 2001 and is eligible to reapply. This is a highly competitive grant. One Florida district was funded in 2008 out of 60 nation-wide.
