Agenda Item #39
K-8 Virtual Instruction Program Contract With K12, Inc.
Florida Statute s1002.45, mandates districts provide full-time K-8 and full or part-time 9-12 virtual instruction to eligible students in 2009-10. This statute also provides districts the option to begin a program in the 2008-09 school year. If approved, Brevard Public Schools will contract with K12, Inc. to provide full-time K-8 instruction beginning in January 2009. K12, Inc. currently operates Florida Virtual Academy (FLVA), a public school choice option for students in Florida, and is a DOE approved vendor for district virtual instruction program with enrollment limited to the Brevard students currently enrolled in FLVA. The students will essentially transfer from FLVA to BPS, but they will continue to receive uninterrupted virtual instruction through K12, Inc. The program is a turnkey solution, including computer equipment, curriculum and implementation support for enrolled students and their families. BPS will collect FTE for each student enrolled in the program and will pay K12, Inc. a fee of $2195 per enrollment. In the event that a student generates less than $2195 in funding through FTE, the fee shall be reduced to equal the amount received by the district. The contract is an opportunity for the district to field test this provider and to have some experience with the level of involvement required of district staff to support the K-8 Virtual School mandate in the 2009-10 school year.
Approve the contract with K12, Inc. for the period of January 2009 - June 2009, to provide virtual instruction to the twenty-two Brevard students currently enrolled in the Florida Virtual Academy.
