Approve the Proposed GED Testing Fee Increase

Discussion

The GED Testing Office requests that the School Board of Brevard County approve a recommendation to increase GED testing fees from $45.00 to $70.00 and retesters from $9.00 to $14.00.

Although Brevard GED testing fees were increased from $40.00 to $45.00 last year, the state GED office, increased the cost of full test-scoring from $17.00 to $28.00, a 64% increase. Retest scoring fees also were increased by 66%. Along with these new state charges, the maximum allowable testing fee was raised from $50.00 to $70.00 to help cover these increases.

The new fees to score the GED tests, if not offset by an increase in fees to testers, will create a deficit of approximately $31,354 in the Brevard GED Office annual budget. Raising the fees to $70.00 will cover the cost of scoring and other administrative costs, including testing proctors and annual contract fees for rental and purchase of GED testing materials and postage. The GED Office annual budget is $142,314, with $88,054 covered from student fees. The remaining $54,260 is funded by grants. (See budget attachment) New state GED fees were effective as of November 1, 2008.

Orange, Seminole, Lake, Indian River, Miami Dade, Hernando and Desoto Counties have now increased their GED fees to $70.00, and several others are slated to implement an increase effective February 1, 2009.



Recommendation
Approve an increase in GED test fees from the current $45.00 to $70.00, beginning February 2009.
