Agenda Item #31
Amend the Contracts for Odyssey Preparatory Academy and Odyssey Charter School
Currently Odyssey Charter School, Inc. operates three charter schools in Brevard; Odyssey Charter, Odyssey Preparatory Academy and Odyssey Space Coast (Fall 2015). Each of the three schools has its own charter contract though they share the same Governing Board. As each of these charters were executed separately from one another, there is language that has caused an issue in the composition of the Governing Board. Odyssey's Governing Board has requested that we amend the Odyssey Charter School and Odyssey Preparatory Academy contracts to mirror the language regarding the two sub-sections of the Governance section of Odyssey Space Coast Academy's contract. The amendment will thereby ensure that the sub-sections guiding the Governance and make-up of the Governing Board of the three separate contracts are commensurate with each other. The current language in the Space Coast Odyssey contract under the Governance section reads as follows: Section 8: Governance (B)(9) Eligible Members of the Governing Body; No employee of the School may be a member of the Governing Body. Board members shall possess special skills, talents and expertise that will support the education and moral development of the School's students. (G)Parent Representative; The School must appoint a representative to facilitate parental involvement, provide access to information, assist parents and others with questions and concerns, and resolve disputes. Their representative must reside in the school district in which the charter school is located and be a parent of a student enrolled in the School. Contracts are available in the Office of School Choice for review if needed.
Recommend to approve the amendment of Odyssey Charter and Odyssey Preparatory Academy contracts to reflect changes in the Governance Sections (B) and (G) to be consistent with the language in Odyssey Space Coast Academy's contract.
