Field Trip - FIRST Robotics "Pink" Team to the FIRST Regional in Perry, GA, FIRST Regional in San Antonio, TX, FIRST Regional in Cincinnati, OH and FIRST World Championship in St. Louis, MO

Discussion

The Robotics "PINK" Team consisting of approximately 45-50 students from Rockledge High, Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High, Space Coast Jr./Sr. High and Viera High Schools and five chaperones is planning to attend the FIRST Georgia Regional competition in Perry, GA, February 26 - March 1, 2015; the FIRST Alamo Regional competition March 11-14, 2015 in San Antonio, TX; the FIRST Queen City Regional competition April 1-4, 2015 in Cincinnati, OH (approximately 15 students); and the FIRST World Championships in St. Louis, MO, April 22-25, 2015.  World Championships are invitation only - to the best of the best, world-wide event.  The five adult chaperones (both male and female) and are all properly fingerprinted with the district.  One is a current Brevard Public Schools employee, two are registered fingerprinted volunteers, one is an engineer mentor from NASA and one is a retired NASA technician.

The team will travel by School Board approved charter bus to Perry, GA February 26-March 1, 2015.  The Event will be held at the Georgia Fairgrounds.  Approximately 50 students and 5 chaperones will attend this competition.  The team will be staying at a FIRST authorized hotel closest to the event.  Students will be driven from the hotel to the event and back both days.  The cost of the trip will be $300.00 each.  Students will pay their own way.  In case of students not being able to pay there will be a fundraiser to help offset the cost.  No student will be denied the opportunity to participate due to funds.  Students will miss two (2) days of school.

The team will travel by air to San Antonio, TX March 11-14, 2015.  The event will be held at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center and the team will be staying at a FIRST authorized hotel closest to the event.  Students will either walk or take public transportation from the hotel to the Convention Center.  The cost of the trip will be $500.00 each.  Students will pay their own way.  In case of students not being able to pay there will be a fundraiser to help offset the cost.  No student will be denied the opportunity to participate due to funds.  Students will miss two (2) days of school.

The team will travel by air to Cincinnati, OH April 1-4, 2015.  The event will be held at Cintas Arena – Xavier University.  Approximately 15 students and four (4) chaperones (both male and female) will attend this competition.  The team will be staying at a FIRST authorized hotel closest to the event.  Students will either be walking or taking public transportation to Cintas Arena. The cost of the trip will be $500.00 each.  Students will pay their own way.  In case of students not being able to pay there will be a fundraiser to help offset the cost.  No student will be denied the opportunity to participate due to funds.  Students will miss two (2) days of school.

The team will travel by air to St. Louis, MO April 22-25, 2015 for the FIRST World Championships.  The event will be held at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis and the team will be staying at a FIRST authorized hotel closest to the event.  Students will either walk or take public transportation from the hotel to the Edward Jones Dome.  Students will miss three (3) days of school.

The trips will be funded by various fundraisers and business partners including NASA student fundraising and donations from various civic organizations.  THERE WILL BE NO COST TO THE DISTRICT.



Recommendation
Approve the request for the Rockledge High, Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High, Space Coast Jr./Sr. High, Viera High Schools Robotics "PINK" Team, approximately 50 students and 5 chaperones, to attend the FIRST Georgia Regional competition in Perry, GA, February 26 - March 1, 2015; the FIRST Alamo Regional competition March 11-14, 2015 in San Antonio, TX; the FIRST Queen City Regional competition April 1-4, 2015 in Cincinnati, OH (approximately 15 students); and the FIRST World Championships in St. Louis, MO, April 22-25, 2015.  The students will miss two (2) days of school for each of the Regional events and three (3) days of school for the World Championship.
