Agenda Item #32

Title
Consultant Agreement for McREL International for school-wide math instruction

Discussion

A consultant from McREL International will present one day of professional development training to teachers at Apollo Elementary and Golfview Elementary on February 17, 2014.  The training will focus on improving school-wide math instruction through a close look at fractals, mathematical practices, and differentiating the math classroom.  This includes a second day observation and feedback for Apollo Elementary on February 18, 2014.  Teachers will learn the process of identifying fractals-specific initiative related to identified instructional practices and strategies.  They will monitor implementation of the highly effective practices and gather data related to implementation of practices as well as increases in student achievement.  Teachers will meet in small groups by grade level and learn about the eight mathematical practices.  The principal will make available the resources:  Putting the Practices into Action, Implementing the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice K-8.  Teachers will observe a model lesson demonstration and discuss effective instructional methodology specifically the math practices as they relate to common core math content.  During the small group sessions with teacher teams, the notion of change and the resulting transitions will be a part of the conversation so teachers are able to determine where they are in terms of transitioning:  Ending, Neutral Zone, or New Beginnings.  The total cost of the agreement is $8,211.00 which includes all travel and per diem expenses as well as preparation and presentation time for actual training over the course of two days.  The consultant will work with the schools prior to training to streamline curriculum to meet individual needs.  The cost will be paid with Title 1 funds from Apollo Elementary and Golfview Elementary.
