Spotlight on Education: Celebrate Literacy Week and Book Giveaways

Since 2007, Brevard’s elementary, middle and high schools have participated in the annual Just Read, Florida! Celebrate Literacy Week.  This year’s theme, “Take the Lead and Read" encourages activities and events promoting the idea that everyone is a leader, and leaders are readers!

As part of Brevard's Celebrate Literacy Week: Take the Lead and Read, Brevard schools participated in a variety of opportunities to promote literacy, including:

  • Public Service Announcement Contest - Students created a three-minute public service announcement to promote the state's “Take the Lead and Read” initiative.
  • Million Minute Marathon – Brevard joined other districts in the state-wide marathon to reach a million minutes of reading.  Last year, 40,819 students within 64 Brevard  schools accumulated a total of 2,506,213 minutes of reading.  Throughout the state, Florida students read a total of 23 million minutes.
  • Voluntary Prekindergarten Simultaneous Reading – Brevard Public School Pre K teachers read “Hot Rod Hamster” by Cynthia Lord aloud to their students at the same time other Pre K students across the state were listening to the same title.
  • Title I Book Giveaway – Title I supported K-6 students in Title I schools who were struggling in the area of reading by giving these students a book to add to their home library.  School staff met with parents to share engaging literacy strategies for them to use when reading with their children at home.
  • Barnes and Nobles Book Giveaway – Through a generous donation from Barnes and Noble patrons, every second grader in a Brevard school received a book for their home library.  A parent letter highlighting strategies for reading with their child accompanied each book.

Commend Brevard principals, assistant principals, literacy coaches, teachers, and the district reading facilitators for taking an active role in putting the spotlight on literacy during Celebrate Literacy Week.  Thank Barnes and Nobles for their valued alliance and partnership in promoting literacy throughout our community by providing a book for each second grade student in Brevard.
