Agenda Item #37

Title
Riverview Elementary Trip to Washington, DC

Discussion

Riverview Elementary 5th and 6th grade students are requesting School Board approval to conduct a trip to Washington, DC on May 11th - 15th, 2010.  Thirty-seven (37) students and nineteen (19) adult chaperones plan to travel be charter bus to visit our nation's capitol.  Some of the events the students will be participating in are having a tour of The White House, Lincoln Park, Washington Monument, Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, Frederick Douglas National Historic Site, Howard University, Embassy Row, Arlington National Cemetery and the Bureau of Printing and Engraving.

The group plans to leave no later than 10:30 p.m. on May 11th and return on May 15th.  Three school days will be missed.  The initial cost for the trip is $299 per student and $359 per adult.  However, $6500 has already been collected through donations and fundraising efforts, with plans for additional fundraisers and expected donations in the fall.  Ultimately the goal is to reduce the student cost to approximately $199 per student.  No child will be denied the ability to participate in the field trip due to inability to pay.  The cost includes hotel rooms, meals, admissions, and transportation.  Students will be responsible for their travel expenses.  There will be no cost to the District.
