Job Description - VPK Instructional Assistant

The VPK Instructional Assistant working for the High School VPK programs is a critical piece of the VPK instructional Team.  In order to maintain consistency on this team, it is imperative we recruit and retain qualified personnel.

Currently, the CTE-VPK Instructional Assistants are on the IUPAT 16 pay scale, a salary which leads to a high turnover rate; the Elementary VPK Instructional Assistants are on the IUPAT 18 pay scale.  This job description recommendation would bring the high school assistants up to the pay level of their peers as well as raise the level of education required, allowing for easier recruiting of qualified, committed assistants.

In addition, our CTE assistants are scheduled for 6.0 hours per day, while the assistants in Elementary Programs are scheduled for 6.5 hours per day.  This role, regardless of division assignment, is at least a 6.5 hour job in order to be done well.  The CTE assistants often work/volunteer after hours to ensure proper care is provided to the children.  These unpaid hours demonstrate their commitment to the program and should be compensated accordingly.

While there is no direct cost savings to the District resulting from the requested change, there are indirect savings found in lower turnover, more qualified and satisfied employees, and a stronger instructional team for our young VPK students.
