Agenda Item #42
Summer Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK)
Florida Statute 1002.61 requires public schools serve all eligible four year olds in a voluntary and free summer prekindergarten program consisting of 300 instructional hours. Brevard Public Schools will implement the plan according to policy, including any changes that may occur as directed by the state. All students who were four years old on or before September 1, 2008, live in Florida, and will be attending kindergarten in August of 2009 are eligible for Summer VPK. Students who attend the year-long VPK program may not attend the summer program.
Funding for Summer VPK is generated by the State of Florida based on a per pupil allocation. State funds appropriated for this program may not be supplemented with other funding.
The program will begin on June 3, 2009 and end on July 29, 2009. Initially, it will be offered at six schools throughout the district and expand to other sites as needed based on enrollment. Enrollment is open throughout the summer and the district must serve ALL eligible students, so additional sites may be added as indicated by increased enrollment.
Approve district participation in the Summer Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) program as it is mandated and funded by State of Florida.
