Agenda Item #16
2015-16 Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program Grant
The Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008 (Farm Bill) authorizes funds for the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) for all states. FFVP grant funding is available for the period of July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016 for elementary schools. One of the criteria for the grant is that eligible schools must have 50 percent or more students who are eligible for free or reduced-price meals. The highest priority will be given to schools with the highest percentages of low-income students. Funds will be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables to be served at no charge to students, while a small percentage of funds may be used for operation and administrative costs incurred for the preparation and distribution of the fruits and vegetables. Funding is estimated at $110,000 and does not require a cash match. The application packet for each school must be submitted to the Florida Department of Consumer Services, Food and Wellness no later than February 27, 2015. Selection of the schools will be made in mid-April. A copy of the application is available in the Office of Food and Nutrition Services for review. Should we be successful in obtaining the grant funding, this item will be brought back to the School Board for approval.
Approved the submission of the Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) application packet for the following elementary schools: Cambridge, Endeavour and Saturn.
