MISSION: TO SERVE EVERY STUDENT WITH EXCELLENCE AS THE STANDARD

02-12-2008 Regular School Board Meeting
Agenda Item #48

Title
H-12. Consultant Agreements: Clearlake Middle School, Sherwood Elementary School and Surfside Elementary School

Discussion

These activities coincide with the school-wide, multi-disciplinary reading project involving activities in all subject areas based on the award winning novels of Roland Smith.  The presentations, along with the thematic unit, aligns with Goal 3 of the School Improvement Plan and addresses the school-wide reading action plan to incorporate reading opportunities into all content areas.  Students will not only get to experience the life of a writer but also that of a wildlife biologist.  This activity will encourage students to read independently.

Clearlake will print out a circulation report from the media center before and after Mr. Smith’s visit to determine if students were motivated to read.  Before the presentation students will be asked to write an essay on “What it takes to Write a Book”.  After the visit students will write a review of the author’s presentation.  This written review will be used to measure the effectiveness of the presentation.  It is our goal that students will learn the process that an author completes in order to publish a book.

Sherwood will print out a circulation report from the media center before and after Mr. Smith’s visit to determine if students were motivated to read.  It is our goal that students will learn the process that an author completes in order to publish a book.

At Surfside the presentation correlates with the language arts Sunshine State Standards. It is tied to vocabulary development and literary analysis. Students will listen to, read and discuss text from the stories written by the author with their teachers in class.  Students will have the opportunity to identify the author’s theme and use details from the text to explain how the author developed the theme. (LA.4.2.1.4)  It will also give our students the opportunity to write a review or critique that compares two or more works by the same author. (LA.6.2.1.6)  The presentation aligns with our reading action plan that is included in our School Improvement Plan, which addresses the improvement of student achievement.  Surfside will print out a circulation report from the media center before and after Mr. Smith’s visit to determine if students were motivated to read.
