MISSION: TO SERVE EVERY STUDENT WITH EXCELLENCE AS THE STANDARD
Agenda Item #42
H-6. Summer Voluntary Prekindergarten
Florida Statute 1002.61 requires public schools serve all eligible four year olds in a voluntary and free summer prekindergarten program consisting of 300 instructional hours. Brevard Public Schools will implement the plan according to policy, including any changes that may occur as directed by the state. All students who were four years old on or before September 1, 2007, live in Florida, and will be attending kindergarten in August of 2008 are eligible. Students who attend the year-long VPK program may not attend the summer program.
Funding for the Summer VPK Program is generated by the State of
The program will begin on June 9, 2008 and end on August 5, 2008. Initially, it will be offered at eight schools throughout the district and expand to other schools as needed based on enrollment. Parents may select the school they would like their child to attend until the classes are full. However, enrollment is open throughout the summer and the district must serve ALL eligible students, so additional “reserve” schools are on notification that they may also serve students if the numbers are higher than the projection.
Approve district participation in the Summer Voluntary Prekindergarten as it is mandated and funded by the State of Florida.
