Agenda Item #20
Magnet Schools Assistance Program (MSAP) Grant
The Office of School Choice is requesting permission to write and submit an application for the 2013-2016 Magnet Schools Assistance Program (MSAP) grant to provide innovative and challenging programs for students attending McNair Magnet Middle School, Stone Middle School, and Palm Bay High School. The grant is proposing the implementation of a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.) "theme" at these three (3) schools.
The purpose of the Magnet Schools Assistance Program (MSAP) is to support the development and implementation of magnet schools that reduce, eliminate, or prevent minority group isolation. The 2013-2016 MSAP application, published by the United States Department of Education - Office of Innovation and Improvement, is due on March 1, 2013.
Upon approval of the grant, the Board will be asked to approve an agenda item granting permission for Brevard Public Schools to accept the allocated grant funds and to implement the MSAP plan, as approved by the United States Department of Education. Moreover, the Board will be required to adopt a resolution to take official action to amend the district desegregation plan to include these three (3) schools.
The proposed grant budget may total up to $4 million over three years. No match of district funds is required.
Approve the writing and submission of the 2013-2016 MSAP grant application by March 1, 2013.
