Agenda Item #16
Field Trip - The "Pink Alliance" Robotics Team to Participate in the South Super Regional - March 22 - 25, 2017 in Athens, GA
The Pink Alliance is a cooperative robotics team whose student members attend Rockledge High School, Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School, Space Coast Jr./Sr. High School and Viera High School. Forty robotic students accompanied by fifteen A+ adult chaperones/faculty sponsors plan to travel to participate in the South Super Regional Competition in Athens, GA on March 22-25, 2017.
Students and chaperones will depart Viera High School via charter bus on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at approximately 12:00 p.m. and arrive in Athens at approximately 5:00 p.m. that same day. The team will be housed at a FIRST-approved hotel near the event venue.
Competition will run for three (3) days, and students will return to Viera High School for parent pick up no later than 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 26, 2017. Students will miss a partial day on March 22 and two (2) additional days of school.
The fees for team registration, a robot kit of parts, and event participation will be approximately $4,000-$5,000. Over the past few years, the district has committed to allocate $6,000 (through rebates from GovConnection to the district) to each high school robotic team to offset registration fees for competitions and various other costs. In addition, students will have out-of-pocket expenses totaling approximately $600 each, to cover gas, lodging and meals. Students will pay their portion of the cost for this trip either directly out of pocket, or through team "sweat equity" and district-approved fundraising activities, donations and grants to help off-set the cost. There will be no additional cost to the district other than the $6,000 allocated to the FIRST Pink Alliance Robotics Team.
Approve the request for The Pink Alliance Robotics Team (consisting of students from four area high schools) to attend the South Super Regional in Athens, GA on March 22-25, 2017.
