Agenda Item #18

Funds Dispersal from Release of Reversionary Interests on Melbourne Property

In regards to funds received from the release of the District's reversionary interests on property in Melbourne owned by BRAG and the City of Melbourne; a committee of elementary music and visual arts teachers, secondary music, theatre, and visual arts teachers, principals and assistant principals, two resource teachers, the chief operating officer, and a community member met on October 13, 2016, to discuss allocation of these funds. The meeting was facilitated by two members from our Department of Professional Learning and Development.  Prior to the committee meeting, every BPS school was asked to give, via an online survey, their suggestions for the use of the funds.  The survey results were compiled and distributed to the committee prior to the meeting.

Approve the committee's recommendation to divide the sum into two parts: 75% to schools; 25% to the District.

School Funds (75%)

  • The school portion will be divided equally between the 82 schools.
  • Each school will decide how to spend the received funds for the school's arts programs.
  • The schools will be given a deadline for spending their portions; unspent funds will be "pulled back."

District Funds (25%)

These funds will be awarded via grant applications.

  • Neil Levine, Executive Director of the Brevard Cultural Alliance, will assist us in developing the guidelines for the grants and the rubric with which the grant applications will be evaluated.
  • Neil Levine made a recommendation to include an independent CPA in the grant process.
  • Included in the grant process will be the application, rubric, a committee for reviewing and awarding the monies, and a report indicating how the funds were used from those receiving the funds.
