Agenda Item #15

Fiscal Year (FY) 2010 National School Lunch Program (NSLP) Equipment Assistance Grants

The Fiscal Year (FY) 2010 National School Lunch Program (NSLP) Equipment Assistance Grants provides a one-time appropriation of funds for equipment assistance to eligible school food authorities (SFAs) that participate in the NSLP.  The total state funding is $1,377,438 and each SFA has been given the opportunity to competitively apply for this grant.  The equipment requested must fall into one of the following four focus areas:

  1. Equipment that lends itself to improving the quality of school food service meals that meet the dietary guidelines
  2. Equipment that improves the safety of food served
  3. Equipment that improves the overall efficiency of the school food service operations
  4. Equipment that allows SFAs to support expanded participation in a school meal program

The Florida Department of Education (FL-DOE) Food and Nutrition Management (FNM) Section will utilize a point system to determine awards.  SFAs are only permitted to request equipment for schools in which 50 percent of more of the students are eligible for free or reduced-price meals.

The Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) has prioritized their cafeteria equipment needs based on the four focus areas and has prepared a grant application requesting $60,769 in funding.  Due to the time constraint of the deadline for submission, the Superintendent signed the grant application in order to meet the February 18, 2011 deadline.  The grant awards will be announced in the coming months and funds for procured equipment must be obligated by May 1, 2011 and expended by August 1, 2011.  The criteria for the application are attached and a copy of the application is available in the FNS office for review.

Approve the submittal of the Fiscal Year (FY) 2010 National School Lunch Program (NSLP) Equipment Assistance Grants application to the Department of Education, Office of Grants.
