02-23-2016 Special School Board Meeting


he School Board of Brevard County, Florida met in special session on Tuesday, February 23, 2016, at the Educational Services Facility, 2700 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, Viera, Florida. Notice of the meeting was advertised in the Eagle newspaper on Thursday, January 21, 2016. The affidavit of publication with a copy of the ad attached is filed in the Affidavit File in the Board Office.

Minutes: 

Prior to the Board meeting, the 4th through 6th grade students of the Nebulae Chorus and strings students in grades 5 & 6 from Challenger 7 Elementary School, under the direction of Tee Rockwell, music specialist, provided entertainment.

The students performed one more number after the meeting began.

Minutes: 

Dr. Blackburn welcomed and introduced newly appointed administrative staff and retiree: Tim Cool, principal of Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High and Christy Meraz, newly appointed assistant principal at Endeavour Elementary.


Each was given time to address the audience and introduce family, friends and colleagues, who were in attendance.

Accept the retirement of Kenneth J. Winn, Principal at Edgewood Jr./Sr. High School, effective June 30, 2016.

Accept the retirement of Cynthia M. Van Meter, Associate Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction, effective April 30, 2016.

The reclassification of Christy A. Meraz from the position of Teacher at Endeavour Elementary School to the position of Assistant Principal (10 month) at Endeavour Elementary School, on annual contract, effective February 24, 2016. Annual salary based on grade 22 of the Nonbargaining Salary Administration Program.

Minutes: 

There was extensive discussion among all of the Board members. It was determined that more information was needed before a public hearing could be held.  The Board asked for Dr. Blackburn to organize a workshop between the Board, legal counsel, community groups (including parents), administrators and students to see what components of the revised policies (including 3122 and 2260.01), were viable and what areas needed to be reworked. 

The ultimate goal of the Board is how to best protect all of Brevard's students. 

Mr. Ziegler stated that we need to determine what the problem is that we are trying to solve and move on from there.
