Agenda Item #11

National Model Schools of Professional Learning Communities at Work

In recent years, professional learning communities (PLCS) have been identified as one of the most important structures to support the work of high performing schools and school districts.  PLCs have been defined in Learning by Doing (2006) as "Educators committed to working collaboratively in ongoing processes of collective inquiry and action research to achieve better results for the students they serve.  PLCs operate under the assumption that the key to improved learning for students is continuous, job-embedded learning for educators.  High performing PLCs focus on student learning, teacher collaboration, and results.

The allthingsplc.info website is a non-commercial resource that serves school districts and educators along their journey to becoming professional learning communities.  This website recognizes schools and districts that have attained status as National Model of PLCs at Work.  Currently, there are 168 schools nationwide that are identified as national models.  Florida has 22 national model schools which are all in Brevard County.  Brevard County has more national model schools than any school district as well as any state in the country.

National model schools must meet rigorous criteria contained in the "Evidence of Effectiveness".  National model schools must demonstrate a commitment to PLC concepts, implement those concepts for at least three years, present clear evidence of improved student learning, and explain the practices, structures and culture of the school.  National model schools must update their "Evidence of Effectiveness" annually to maintain their model status.

The presentation will consist of a banner for each newly recognized model school and a certificate signifying that this school is a nationally recognized Model School of PLCs at Work.
