Agenda Item #22

Florida Department of Health Child Care Program

In October, the Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) requested authorization from the School Board to submit an application packet for the Florida Department of Health (FDOH), Child Care Food Program (CCFP).  We are pleased to report that the application was approved by the FDOH.  The program feeds children outside the normal school day and on weekends. The program requirements are similar to that of the National School Breakfast and Lunch Programs and the meals involved may include:

  • Afternoon snack to Head Start students;
  • Breakfast or lunch and/or a snack on FCAT Saturday;
  • Breakfast or lunch and/or a snack on Harris Super Science Saturdays;
  • Supper at schools in high poverty areas;

Implementation consists of the following phases which will occur over the next 6 months.

  •    Phase 1 - Head Start snacks (beginning March 1st)
  •    Phase 2 - FCAT Saturday feedings
  •    Phase 3 - After School Suppers for the high poverty stricken areas.

FNS staff will be attending training on the CCFP program to ensure proper implementation and FNS will provide the Board with an update on the CCFP program in the spring.

For your reference, the original CCFP application is attached.  It is the intent that the FDOH approval letter will be provided prior to or at the Board Meeting.
