Agenda Item #40
Alternative Certification Program
Brevard County's state DOE-approved Alternative Certification Program (ACP) is one of the options open to full-time BPS teachers who were hired with a temporary content-area teaching certificate and who must choose and complete one of the "routes to professional certification" available to Florida teachers. The ACP is one of those routes. It consists of more than 250 hours of inservice training and mentoring in effective teaching practices; participants must pass the DOE Subject Area Exam in the content they are teaching to obtain the temporary teaching certificate required for entrance. Within the first year hired, they must pass the General Knowledge examination; within the three years of their validity period, they must also pass the Professional Education Examination and complete all requirements of the inservice training program including successful completion of their professional portfolios, passing a 60-hour Reading course, and passing a 60-hour English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) course. Current participants pay $950 to the Brevard County School Board to offset costs of the program. Semi-monthly payroll deduction is available to them for the fee. Costs of substitutes and materials have risen steadily in the past ten years; this proposal is to raise fees by $250 (to $1,200). The new fee will pay for 7 substitutes and all training materials per participant, and the $1,200 fee matches the lowest fee in comparable surrounding programs (see attachment).
Approve the teacher participant fee for Brevard County's Alternative Certification Program at $1,200 beginning with the 2013-14 school year.
