02-26-2019 Board Workshop

The School Board of Brevard County, Florida met for a Board Workshop on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at the Educational Services Facility, 2700 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, Viera, Florida. Notice of the meeting was advertised in the Eagle newspaper on Thursday, February 14, 2019. The affidavit of publication with a copy of the ad attached is filed in the Affidavit File in the Board Office.

Jane Cline, Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Leading and Learning, introduced Wendy Smith, Head Start Executive Director who provided an update on Brevard's Head Start Program.

5. Charter School Presentation


John Moran, founder of Pineaple Cove Classical Academy, Kelly Gunter, Head of Schools and Lisa Wheeler, principal, provided the Board with an overview of the curriculum and principals of the new charter school they wish to open Pineapple Cove Classical Academy at Pineda.

Board members asked questions and received information.

6. Brevard After School Presentation


Stephanie Archer, assistant superintendent of Equity, Innovation and Choice, began by introducing Debi Embry, the coordinator of Brevard After School (BAS).  Pennie Zuercher, Chief Financial Officer, went over a presentation prepared to show the Board current information about the BAS program; where we are and where we will be without a fee increase.  She outlined options.  Without a fee increase, the District will only go more and more in the red.  Board members had lots of questions and there was much discussion about the issue. 

Board members came to a consensus to have a small increase beginning after the summer and re-evaluate after a year.  They also wanted staff to evaluate  differentiated fee schedule recommendations/information.
