Agenda Item #27
Approve Contracted Service Agreement for Mandatory Training through Federally Funded Elementary and Secondary School Counseling Grant "Project Understanding Students"
SEL Media, Inc. has been designated to provide the required training through the Elementary and Secondary School Counseling Program Grant. The SS GRINS curriculum and training products, designed and presented by SEL Media, Inc., will be utilized for school social workers, guidance staff and selected teachers who directly affect student progress. Selected students will participate from kindergarten through 6th grade at four school sites (Turner, Discovery, Riverview and Imperial Estates). The focus is on children identified as having issues in social relationships, emotional regulation and personal needs that impede academic and personal success.
Additionally, there will be training of a core group of potential trainers who will receive specific methods in guiding teachers in instructing social isolates toward new skills for social success by using the three C's-Confidence, Communication, and Cooperation. There will also be a skill-building workshop for potential trainers to work with school personnel to increase the knowledge and application of emotional literacy. Teachers and staff will learn the role of emotional knowledge in academic performance, building quality relationships, making informed decisions, and managing and leading classrooms. There will also be one evening parent training session focusing on ways to support emotional literacy through the family available and open to any parent of elementary-aged students. Predictable outcomes will be children who will recognize, understand, label, express, and regulate emotion which will lead to quality outcomes in academic and personal growth.
Approve the consultant agreement with SEL Media, Inc. in the amount of $5,000 for consultation and training. Grant for Elementary and Secondary School Counseling (ESSC) is budgeted for this service at a cost of $244.45 per hour with an estimated 18 paid hours of training services.
