Agenda Item #37
2012-2013 Later Start School Year Calendar and School Year Calendar Standards
As an academically high-performing school district, Brevard Public Schools has been exempt from Florida Statute 1001.42(4)(f) which requires a uniform start date no earlier than 14 days before Labor Day. Students and teachers benefit from completing the first semester prior to the winter vacation, finishing semester exams before the extended holiday. Employees and community families have built budgets, vacation plans, and child care plans based on this current school year calendar design.
With the new challenges presented by FCAT 2.0, revised assessments, end-of-course exams (EOCs), and higher performance standards, BPS teachers and students will work harder than ever to prepare and perform at high levels. If for some reason, Brevard Public Schools does not meet the criteria to be identified as an academically high-performing school district, the district will be required to abide by statute 1001.42(4)(f) and start no earlier than 14 days before Labor Day. In preparation for this possible change, School Year Calendar Standards to be used to create a later start calendar should be created at this time so the District can communicate with all stakeholders in as timely manner as possible. School Board Policy 8210-School Calendar will have to be revised as well.
Teachers and parents are encouraged to build contingency plans in the event that the District is forced to change our 2012-2013 school year calender once test results are returned to the District in June. Employees should consider creating a budget savings plan, and parents should consider options for child care should the summer vacation period be extended for two additional weeks in August.
The impact of a later start calendar would include first semester exams being given mid-January, and year-end exams would be given after Memorial Day. The students' last day would be May 31, 2013.
Three calendar standards must be changed. Standard IV B, Standard IV C, and Standard VI A(3) must be changed to align the District's school year calendar with Florida statute 1001.42(4)(f).
Approve the revisions to the School Year Calendar Standards and approve the later start date for the 2012-2013 school year calendar.
