Agenda Item #36
2012-2013 School Year Calendar
Brevard Public Schools is identified as an academically high-performing school district for the 2011-2012 school year. As a result of that designation, Florida Statute Section 1003.621 entitles districts to exemptions from statutes in Chapters 1000-1013 other than those identified in Florida Statute Section 1003.621(2).
One of the statutes for which an exemption is allowed is 1001.42(4)(f). This is the statute which requires a uniform start date no earlier than 14 days before Labor Day.
This recommended calendar allows us to complete the first semester prior to the winter break each year.
If for some reason, Brevard Public Schools is not identified as an academically high-performing school district for 2012-2013, changes will have to be made to the School Year Calendar Standards and School Board Policy 8210-School Calendar. Once these changes are approved by the School Board, a new school year calendar for 2012-2013 will have to be presented to the School Board for review and approval.
It is recommended that the School Board adopt the school calendar for 2012-2013 utilizing the exemption from Florida Statute Section 1003.621. The exemption is to Florida Statute Section 1001.42(4)(f) for the required start date for the opening of schools.
