Agenda Item #29
Brevard Property Appraiser Homestead Audit
The Brevard County Property Appraiser's office is working on an initiative to perform an audit on our entire county tax roll to ensure that all recipients of homestead exemptions are valid. In addition to their internal efforts to identify fraud, they have elected to hire Tax Management Associates (TMA), a leader in the field of large scale tax role audits. TMA is compensated for their work on a contingency basis only. When TMA identifies a fraudulent case, the Property Appraiser's staff proofs the case and a lien is filed and then collected. When the lien is paid, TMA would receive 28% of the amount collected. In order for the Property Appraiser's office to formally agree to participate in the audit, the governing body of the School Board has to agree to a three party interlocal agreement. Both Harold Bistline, School Board Attorney and Pennie Zuercher, Chief Financial Officer have reviewed the contract and both feel that it would be beneficial to our district and is expected to provide additional local revenues.
Approve the agreement to have Brevard County Property Appraiser's office contract with Tax Management Associates (TMA) to conduct a county-wide audit on homestead exemptions utilizing tax collections to fund exemption audit services.
