Agenda Item #9
SIFT Recognition for Scholarships to National Board Applicants
The Summer Industrial Fellowships for Teachers (SIFT) Board of Directors donated $6,250 to support five scholarships for National Board Certified Teacher applicants of $1250 each. Ed O'Connor, President of the Board of Directors for SIFT, and Don Beck, Executive Director of SIFT, presented a check to the school district so that five candidates for NBCT who do not teach at Title I schools and therefore were not eligible for the Florida Department of Education's $1250 scholarships could receive funding for half of the application fee for National Board Certification ($2500). The five National Board candidates who received the $1,250 scholarships are: Julee Segert, Merritt Island High; Sabrina Nobili, Melbourne High; Jessica Mutter, Melbourne High; Michelle Ho-On, Suntree Elementary; and Christine Berrier, Atlantis Elementary. For the past ten years, 90% of the application fees have been paid by the state under the Florida Excellent Teaching Act; however, this year due to budget cuts the funding did not exist. SIFT has partnered with Brevard Public Schools for many years to provide summer training that integrates content knowledge with real life work experience; they wanted to support teacher leaders in our National Board program to experience high quality professional development through the portfolio process. We recognize and appreciate SIFTs participation in our NBCT program, which is ranked second in the nation in percentage of NBCTs among large districts.
Recognize SIFT for donation of $6,250 to the National Board Program in Brevard County. Ed O'Connor, President of the Board of Directors of SIFT, and Don Beck, Executive Director of SIFT, will receive the recognition.
