Agenda Item #38
2009-2010 and 2010-2011 School Year Calendars
Brevard Public Schools is one of the 11 districts identified as a high academic performing district for the 2008-2009 school year. As a result of that designation as a high academic performing district, Florida Statute Section 1003.621, entitles the 11 districts to exemptions from all statutes in Chapters 1000 - 1013 other than those identified in Florida Statute Section 1003.621(2).
One of the statutes for which an exemption is allowed is 1001.42(4)(f). This is the statute which requires a uniform start date no earlier than 14 days before Labor Day.
These recommended calendars allow us to complete the first semester prior to the winter break each year.
It is also recommended that two of the originally identified emergency make up days be changed based on input from the Brevard Federation of Teachers. Instead of identifying the day before Thanksgiving and the teacher workday between semesters as emergency make up days, the new recommendation is to add two emergency make up days to the end of the school year - the teacher post planning day and the following day. These suggested changes are included in the attached calendar drafts.
It is recommended that the School Board adopt the school calendars for 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 utilizing the exemption from Florida Statute Section 1003.621. The exemption is to Florida Statute Section 1001.42(4)(f) for the required start date for the opening of schools.
