Agenda Item #38
Secondary Social Studies Instructional Materials Adoption
This Social Studies Selection Committee is comprised of teachers, administrators, literacy coaches and parents. After an extensive review of the available materials, the committee recommends that the Board approve this expenditure to ensure all classrooms have quality materials to support strong social studies instruction.
The materials listed on the attachment, align well with the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards for Social Studies. They also provide rich text to support integration of English/language arts and social studies. The selection committee found these programs to best meet their established criteria of embedded rigor and critical thinking, differentiation, strong content, enhanced technological tools and key supports for teachers, students and families.
In order to ensure a smooth transition to a new program, selected materials were also made available for public viewing on February 20, 2017, from 5:50-7:30 p.m., in the Board room. If approved, per the new statute, §1006.28, FL Statute (2016), all instructional materials will also be digitally available for the 30-day public review process. Information regarding how to access these materials was provided to parents through a banner on the BPS homepage, BPS social media, a flyer through Peachjar and an email to every parent through Edline. Schools will be provided implementation components for teachers of the courses listed on the attachment.
Approve the adoption of the instructional materials listed on the attachment as the District Unified Social Studies Core Program for all 7th-12th grade students. Approval of this agenda item will allow for expenditures up to 3.5 million dollars for secondary social studies materials.
