Agenda Item #36
Public Hearing - Elementary Social Studies Textbook Adoption (Parent Petitions)
This recommendation from the Elementary K-6 Social Studies Selection Committee is the result of extensive review of the available programs and input from K-6 teachers, administrators, literacy coaches and parents. The committee recommends that the Board approve this expenditure to ensure all K-6 classrooms have quality materials to support strong social studies instruction.
Studies Weekly and Teachers’ Curriculum Institute (TCI), History Alive! The Ancient World align well with the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards for Social Studies. They also provide rich text to support integration of English Language arts and Social Studies. The selection committee found this program to best meet their established criteria of embedded rigor and critical thinking, differentiation, strong content, rich text and key supports for teachers, students and families.
Given the new statute 1006.28, Fla. Stat (2016), all instructional materials will go through a 30-day public review process. In order to ensure a smooth transition to a new program, the Selection Committee provided a second option for both 5th and 6th grades. The second option for 5th grade is Teachers’ Curriculum Institute History Alive! America’s Past. The second option for 6th grade is National Geographic World History Ancient Civilizations. The selection committee recommends that the board approve the second option for both 5th and 6th grade. The 30-day public review may result in petitions regarding the recommended programs, so it is important the contingency options are in place. Bringing all possible materials for public review at the same time will ensure that schools are able to order materials supported by the Board and the community in time for the start of the 2017-18 school year.
Hold a public hearing to evaluate parent petitions received regarding the Elementary Social Studies Textbook to determine if further assessment is needed. Below are the recommendations of the K-6 Social Studies Selection Committee which were approved by the Board on January 24,2017.
