03-22-2011 Special School Board Meeting
Agenda Item #40

Title
Document Based Question Project

Discussion

The next Generation Sunshine State Standards for reading require that students read a variety of text types at a higher level of cognitive complexity.  These text types represent differing point of views while including issues and problems that persist over time.

The Document Based Question Project (DBQ Project) format provides background information, questioning techniques, analytical thinking process, document analysis, and a systematic writing approach to enable students to clarify their thinking.  The systematic analytical process provides a framework for ESE and RtI Tier 2 and 3 support students in high-level critical thinking.  The DBQ Project provides professional development for teachers to support effective implementation of critical thinking strategies in their classrooms using variety of historical texts.

This includes:

  • 2 days on site training for 180 teachers that include 5th, 6th and Lead Teachers (ESE, Literacy Coach or Title I).  This would include two trainers working with 45 teachers each day for a total of 8 days.

The total cost of these services is $12,000

Recommendation
Approve the DBQ Project proposal to provide professional development for teachers as described above for a total cost of $12,000.
