Agenda Item #41
Math Solutions, a Division of Scholastic Inc. Proposal
If students do not develop math expertise in K-2, their ability to be successful in higher level mathematics is greatly diminished. Many students find the mathematical skills in higher grades extremely challenging without the foundational skills learned and strategies developed in K-2.
Third grade FCAT data provide evidence that Brevard students are not achieving the level of mathematical success expected. In order to achieve and maintain a higher level of mathematical success, students must enter 3rd grade mathematically proficient in the content of the K-2 NGSSS. They must have strong number sense and the ability to apply their knowledge to higher level skills. All students, especially those in Tiers 2 and 3, must have the opportunity to develop true conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts.
K-2 teachers in Brevard need support in order to afford students the opportunity to attain the necessary depth of understanding of the mathematical content. They need sustained high-quality professional development. A comprehensive approach is needed to increase teacher effectiveness and student achievement.
Math Solutions, a division of Scholastic Inc. has provided a proposal to provide professional development for 120 K-2 teachers. This includes:
The total cost for these services is $158,200.
Approve the proposal from Math Solutions, a division of Scholastic Inc. and allow Elementary Programs to contract with them to provide professional development for 120 kindergarten through second grade teachers as described above in the amount of $158,200.
