03-25-2008 Special School Board Meeting
Agenda Item #48

Title
G-2. SOAR 2008

Discussion

The Summer Opportunities for Acceleration and Remediation (SOAR) program will take approximately $4 million to implement.  Program explanations and associated costs of each follow:

Extended School Year (ESY) serves students with disabilities who need summer services to maintain their current level of performance.  The individual educational plans (IEP) for these students indicate the need for a summer program.  The approximate cost for ESY is $1,638,891.

Remediation offerings will cost approximately $1,960,411.  The SOAR remedial program targets:

  • K-2 students working below grade level in reading and/or mathematics
  • Grades 3-10 students who scored at Level I or Level II on FCAT Reading and/or Mathematics
  • Students in grades 11 & 12 who failed FCAT

Transportation is provided for any student who must attend the extended school year (ESY).  The cost for transportation is about $145,000, which includes a little over $124,000 for teacher assistant (TA) salaries.  It is necessary that these TAs ride the bus to support some of our ESY students.

Middle School Career Exploratory Program - $79,042

Career and Technical courses for select students in grade 11 - $18,328

Note: An addendum to this agenda listing recommended program cuts will be attached.
