04-08-2014 Regular School Board Meeting
Agenda Item #40

Title
Job Descriptions - Transportation

Discussion
This item is a conversion of two existing positions that address the need for specialized technicians to perform interior maintenance on the BPS school bus fleet.  The Vehicle Interiors Technician consists of the repair and maintenance of seat cushions and flame retardant seat covers, which are a key safety feature of the "compartmentalization" concept of student safety.  Work is currently completed on a part-time basis by semi-skilled bus drivers between their daily routes.

The Video & Communications Technician will perform routine and emergency maintenance to the video surveillance system and 2-way radio systems in the bus fleet.  These systems are vital to student safety and have evolved through recent years, requiring a technician dedicated to the performance of these duties. Work is currently completed on a part-time basis by semi-skilled bus drivers between their daily routes.

Neither position will require additional employee allocations nor changes to current salaries.

Recommendation
Recommend approval of the Fleet Vehicle Interiors Technician and Fleet Video & Communications Technician job descriptions.
