Agenda Item #28
Elementary K-6 English/Language Arts (ELA) Materials Adoption
The adoption of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English/Language Arts has created a need for rigorous materials aligned with these new standards. This recommendation from the Elementary K-6 English/Language Arts Selection Committee is the result of an extensive review of the available programs and input from K-6 teachers, administrators, literacy coaches, and parents. The committee recommends that the Board approve this $4,000,000 expenditure to ensure all K-6 classrooms have standards-aligned materials to support quality reading and language arts instruction.
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Journeys 2014 is well aligned to the CCSS, as is evident throughout the teacher and student materials. The selection committee found this program to best meet their established criteria of matching instruction to standards, embedding rigor and critical thinking, providing for differentiated instruction, integrating content-area topics, and best-practice instruction in the four strands of the CCSS: Reading, Writing, Speaking & Listening, and Language.
In order to provide TK-1 students a curriculum unique from their Kindergarten or 1st grade years, the committee determined that Pearson Scott Foresman Reading Street 2013 materials were the best option. The 1st grade materials from this program were very strong in relation to the criteria referenced above. Providing a structured curriculum in this developmental year will help young students maintain academic momentum.
Approve the adoption of the below-listed materials as the district unified elementary English/Language Arts core program for all K-6 students. Schools will be provided implementation components for each teacher of grades K-6, including ESE teachers. Approval of this agenda item will allow for expenditures up to $4,000,000 for elementary reading and language arts materials.
