Field Trip - Viera High DECA to Anaheim, CA - International Career Development and DECA Competition

Discussion

Viera High School DECA students were winners in the Business Law and Ethics Team Decision Making competition in Orlando Feb. 28 - March 2, 2013 and are requesting approval for three students and two chaperones (both male and female) to participate in the 2013 International Career Development Conference and International DECA Competition in Anaheim, California, April 23-28, 2013.  One chaperone is a current Brevard Public Schools teacher and one is a teacher for Orange County Public Schools. 

The group will leave Viera High at approximately 6 am on Wed., April 24th and travel from Orlando to Anaheim, California via Delta Air.  They will stay at the Anaheim Hilton Convention Center where all of the competitive events are taking place.  The return flight via United Airlines will begin at 7 am on Sunday arriving in Orlando at 2:40 p.m. where parents will meet students at the airport.  The trip will require students to miss three days of school (Wed., April 24 – Fri., April 26).  Students are not scheduled for FCAT testing during this time.

The cost per student is $962 plus students will provide funds to cover their individual meals.  Students will be doing fundraising and looking for corporate sponsorship.  There will be no cost to the district.  Due to time constraints with only one meeting in March this agenda item is being presented to the Board once for consent without information.  



Recommendation

Approve the Viera High School request for three students and two chaperones, to participate in the 2013 International Career Development Conference and International DECA Competition in Anaheim, California, April 23-28, 2013.  The students will miss three (3) school days.
