04-22-2008 Regular School Board Meeting
Agenda Item #7

Title
B-1. Recognize Outstanding School Volunteers

Discussion

Mrs. Tehani Kisor was selected as the district's Outstanding Adult Volunteer.  Nominated by Lockmar Elementary, over the last seven years Mrs. Kisor has held many important roles.  She has mentored students, chaired the Hospitality Shoppe for students in December, served as the Kindergarten Coordinator in the Apple Corps Workshop, organized the annual Spring Fling, worked in the clinic, and has served on the School Improvement Council for five years.

Mr. Kyle Singleton was selected as the Outstanding Youth Volunteer by University Park Elementary.  Through his dedication, 23 Palm Bay high School students are earning Bright Future volunteer hours through the Teen Trendsetter Reading Mentors program while at the same time providing free one-on-one tutoring for 23 University Park Elementary School students. He is admired and respected by the Palm Bay students as well as the staff at University Park.

Mr. John Strahle was nominated for Outstanding Senior Volunteer by Dr. W. J. Creel Elementary.  Whether sponsoring and planning for the weekly Science Club, solving technical problems for teachers and students, teaching small group math or science, researching virtual field trips, running off copies for teachers, making bulletin boards, judging science fairs, chaperoning field trips, or mentoring one on one, Jack Strahle makes a difference.

Mrs. Dorothy Watkins was selected as Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High’s Outstanding Mentor.  In the words of the student she mentors, “I’m blessed to have a mentor like Mrs. Dorothy; she’s dedicated, smart, and fun.  I know when I am older and look back on our sessions and conclude them as a basis to what forms my personality.  I could never thank her enough.”
