Agenda Item #38
F-9. 2008-2009 School Year Calendar
At the March 11 and March 25 School Board meetings, the Board discussed a memorandum from Bill Hall, Director of Educational Leadership and Professional Development, regarding the Senior Staff's recommendation to keep the currently approved 2008-2009 school year calendar. At the direction of the Board, the Superintendent was asked to look at options to the calendar that will allow the district to hold exams prior to the Winter Vacation.
As a follow-up to the March 25 School Board meeting and at the request of the School Board, the Superintendent directed Brenda Blackburn, Associate Superintendent, Curriculum and Instruction, to get general input from principals and teachers about their reaction to having teachers report to school two days earlier than originally planned for August, 2008 (see attached). The Superintendent requested that principals facilitate the discussion at their schools and communicate their findings to the Area Superintendents by April 14, 2008. The feedback that the Area Superintendents collected identified Option 3 as the overwhelming preference.
It is recommended that the School Board adopt Calendar Option 3 for the 2008-2009 school year.
