Agenda Item #39
Consultant Agreement: Suntree Elementary and The Center for Effective Learning
A three day H.E.T. (Highly Effective Teaching) Science Academy will be hosted by Suntree Elementary. A minimum of six other Brevard schools will be sending teacher teams -- Gardendale, Lewis Carroll, Enterprise, Quest, MILA and Longleaf. Two Kovalik consultants will work with up to 50 teachers in primary and intermediate teams to develop units of study based on the Sunshine State Standards. Units will incorporate engaging teaching techniques to better serve students. The training focuses on building the skills necessary to meet the challenges and requirements of today's standards, benchmarks and mandates. Participants will partner in a collaborative, team-based approach to learn how to effectively increase student engagement and raise achievement levels through brain-compatible educational practices. In general, the Center for Effective Learning provides customized training opportunities designed to support educators in their quest to prepare students to master the 21st century demands of a global economy. Seminars connect current brain research as the foundation for increasing human capacity, promoting higher skills in problem solving and producing products both for teachers and students. Forming professional learning communities around a "conceptual curriculum" -- embedding the standards, implementing current brain research, driving instruction with assessment, integrating subject areas, and promoting career opportunities and responsible citizenship is also a part of the seminars.
Suntree Elementary used various school based fundraisers to earn the money for the consultant fee. Due to the availability of additional slots at the training other school were invited to send participants at a cost of $100 per person.
Approve the consultant agreement in the amount of $10,500 for Suntree Elementary to sponsor The Center for Effective Learning's HET 3-day Science Academy to be held May 29, 30 & 31, 2012.
