04-24-2012 Special School Board Meeting
Agenda Item #24

Title
Florida Academic Literacy Network Project

Discussion

Brevard Public Schools received a $75,000 competitive grant award from The Florida Academic Literacy Network.  This grant award covers a two-year project period resulting in the district receiving $37,500 each year to support professional development and project materials.  The grant is designed to assist Astronaut and Titusville High Schools as well as Andrew Jackson and James Madison Middle Schools in the implementation of Literacy Design Collaborative Modules.  Schools were selected based on their unique needs and  articulation of students from the middle to the high school.  Year 1 of the project will focus on implementation in 8th and 9th grades, and 7th and 10th grades will be added in Year 2, providing a literacy continuum across four grade levels.  District resource teachers will work with the four schools to create and implement modules based on the literacy action plan developed by the National Literacy Project.  Grounded in research and best practice, the goal of the National Literacy Project is to address the implementation of Common Core State Standards across the content areas.  Ultimately, this connection will lead to the improvement of students' reading and writing achievements.  National Literacy Project partners will work with schools and district personnel to develop, implement, and monitor a unique literacy action plan designed specifically to meet the needs of Brevard students.

There is not a requirement for the local educational agency to match funds.  Additionally, no personnel will be hired as a result of the grant award.

A copy of the full grant application is available in the grants development office.
