04-26-2011 Regular School Board Meeting
Agenda Item #8

Outstanding School Volunteers

Mr. David Melnyk, a Brevard Community College student and Brevard Public Schools graduate, dedicates his time to help students and faculty at Hoover Middle School in Indialantic, earning him the Outstanding Youth Volunteer Award for 2011. David focuses on technology and the media center for his volunteer work. It is not unusual to see him with a bunch or wires and connectors in his hands as he heads out to a class to trouble shoot a problem for a classroom teacher. He installs software, assists teachers in using new technology devices and even creates displays for the media center. He does this with tremendous energy and enthusiasm and always with a smile on his face. Nominated for her service to West Melbourne Elementary School for Science, Ms. Charmane Miller is the Outstanding Adult Volunteer for 2011. While she is a full-time finance manager for a corporation, she still manages to donate hundreds of hours a month to the students, faculty and parents of West Melbourne Elementary. She was instrumental in forming the first Parent Teacher Organization the school has ever had. Ms. Miller also created a “Partners in Education” program to assist with needed technology, supplies, programs and equipment needed for the school. This is only a sampling of the many things Ms. Miller has done to support West Melbourne School for Science. The Outstanding Senior Volunteer for 2011, Mr. Lester Stafford has been a fixture at Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High for 35 years, donating over 2000 hours in the past 18 months. Each year Mr. Stafford sets up all home basketball, volleyball, and wrestling matches. He works the gate at all home events and coordinates the “Athlete of the Week” program at Cocoa Beach. He assists with all the athletic teams including the cheerleaders, sets up for special events and coordinates pick-up and delivery for the sports programs. Not only is Mr. Stafford recognized and respected by all the students of Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr High but he is warmly greeted by visiting teams and their coaches. Mr. Stafford’s dedication to the students of Brevard Public Schools has not only earned him the honor of our 2011 Outstanding Senior Volunteer but we are very proud to announce that Lester Stafford was chosen as the Florida Department of Educations’ 2011 Region 3 Outstanding Senior Volunteer.
