04-27-2010 Regular School Board Meeting
Agenda Item #35

Title
Purchase of Braille Devices to Allow Access to Technology for Blind and Visually Impaired Students

Discussion

A PAC Mate Portable Braille Display device allows students who are Visually Impaired access to technology, such as Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player and Pocket Outlook.  It also provides a fully functional word processor, records lectures and plays book recordings.  This device can be used by Braille readers to take the Florida Assessments for Instruction in Reading (FAIR) and computerized FCAT tests.  The PAC Mate can also function as a GPS for advanced Orientation and Mobility training.  This equipment is compatible with district software currently used with our students and can grow with our students.

This purchase is supported by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) 2009.

Recommendation

Approve purchase of Freedom Scientific's PAC Mate accessible Braille technology for the Visually Impaired program.  Freedom Scientific is a sole source vendor of these products with the district.
