Agenda Item #13
Recognize Fairglen Elementary as Brevard's First National STARS Award Recipient
Fairglen Elementary is only the second elementary school in the state of Florida to receive national acclaim as a National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) STARS school. To earn this distinction, National Board Certified Teacher and current Excellence in Physical Education Award winner, Beth Cavallaro, submitted an extensive portfolio including a narrative with evidence and documentation compiled over nearly a year which was reviewed by an independent panel of judges from around the country. The 31 criteria for this award are based on the essential elements necessary for a quality physical education program including the following: content based on the National Standards for Physical Education; educationally and developmentally appropriate instructional strategies and teaching skills; adequate facilities and equipment that are safe and appropriate for the age and abilities of the students and that enable the students to participate in the maximum amount of active time on task; and classes taught by a certified physical educator. Fairglen Elementary School's STAR status will extend from 2009-2014.
