Agenda Item #22

2009 Equipment Assistance Grants for School Food Authorities

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) provides a one-time appropriation of $100 million for equipment assistance to school food authorities (SFAs) which participate in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP).  Funds have been allocated based on each State's school meals administrative expense allocation for fiscal year 2009 and the total funding amount for the state of Florida is $5,403,280.  SFAs have been given the opportunity to competitively apply for the "2009 Equipment Assistance Grants for School Authorities".  The equipment requested must fall into one of the following four focus areas:

  1. Equipment that lends itself to improving the quality of school food service meals that meet the dietary guidelines
  2. Equipment that improves the safety of food served
  3. Equipment that improves the overall efficiency of the school food service operations
  4. Equipment that allows SFAs to support expanded participation

The Department of Education (DOE) will utilize a point system to determine awards and preference points will be given to SFAs in which 50 percent or more of students are eligible for free or reduced price meals.

The Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) has prioritized their cafeteria equipment needs based on the four focus areas and has prepared a grant application requesting $364,030 in funding.  Due to the time constraint of the deadline for submission the Superintendent signed the grant application in order to meet the May 8th deadline.  The grant awards will be announced in the coming months and funds for procured equipment must be obligated by August 31, 2009 and expended by September 30, 2009.  The criteria for the application are attached and a copy of the application is available in the Office of Food and Nutrition Services for review.

Request approval to submit an application for the "2009 Equipment Assistance Grants for School Food Authorities" to the Department of Education, Office of Grants.
