05-13-2008 Regular School Board Meeting
Agenda Item #8

Title
Outstanding School Business Partners of the Year

Discussion

Each year, two Business Partners from our district are selected as the district winners to be honored by the Commissioner of Education.  In addition, a Non-Profit Business Partner of the year is selected to be honored at the district level.

The Outstanding Business Partners of the Year are:

City of Titusville Fire and Emergency Services

A business partner at Apollo Elementary, the City of Titusville Fire & Emergency Services do so much to enrich the lives of Apollo students.  The firemen chaperoned "The International Walk to School Day" to promote personal wellness and safety at Apollo Elementary.  A presentation by Reggie Belle, Life Safety Specialist, was given to the K-6th grade students to increase fire prevention education.  This presentation saved the lives of one family when the parents were rescued by their 2nd and 3rd grade children who had learned about fire safety from the firefighters.  In addition, the firefighters have written books about a firefighter's life to encourage literacy with students at Apollo Elementary.

Parrish Medical Center

Parrish Medical Center has been an extraordinary partner with Titusville High School for the past several years. Parrish donates many items to the Health and Human Services Academy at Titusville High School that are used to help enhance the student’s medical knowledge while providing them with hands-on activities. In addition, Parrish provides scholarships to students at THS. Many of the students at THS are able to make better career and educational choices because of the opportunities that Parrish Medical Center affords them.

Premiere Theatres

Holland Elementary has a business partnership with Robert Kurrus, owner and President of Premiere Theatres in Melbourne.  Mr. Kurrus has provided theatre tickets to students as incentives and to recognize outstanding achievement in many areas. Special showings of educational films have been made available to our students. Under the leadership of Premiere Theatres, wife Stephanie Hill and her parents Glenda and Michael Hill took on the job of labeling all media and classroom library books with the lexile labels necessary for Reading Counts.  An integral part of the Holland family, Mr. and Mrs. Kurrus-Hill spearheaded a drive that built our new playground for primary students in August of 2006.
