Agenda Item #49

Title
Brevard Public Schools Advanced Placement (AP) Diploma Proposal

Discussion

Based upon inquiries from building level principals as well as research and information from the College Board, please find attached a proposal for implementing a Brevard Public Schools Advanced Placement (AP) Diploma.  The proposal focuses on two requirements:  school requirements to offer the diploma and student requirements to earn the diploma.   The rationale is to create a diploma of distinction similar to the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma and Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) Certificate for students who do not choose or are not able to attend an IB Program or an AICE Program, as well as a School of Choice.  Students will complete a specified cluster of AP courses that will accelerate the first year of college through early completion of lower division-general education requirements.  Even though this is not a College Board diploma, schools and districts in Florida and other states have developed an AP Diploma to encourage and reward students who attempt and are successful in meeting the requirements of a more rigorous curricula.  In addition, this would allow equity and access to all students for a diploma of distinction from their home schools.  The proposal also supports the rigorous course requirements of the Secondary School of National Prominence (SSNP) initiative and Strategic Plan Objective 2.3.3.

Upon your review and approval, the AP Diploma would be open to any school meeting the school requirements and would be available only to the students attending that specific school.  There would be no additional dollars required from the District to seed the programs.  In addition, a district AP Diploma would be designed and customized for the individual school.  This is similar to the Superintendent’s Diploma of Distinction awarded in other school districts.
