05-13-2008 Regular School Board Meeting
Agenda Item #27

Title
21st Century Community Learning Center Grant 2008-2009 (NASA)

Discussion

Brevard Public Schools office of Adult and Community Education will partner with Delaware North Parks and Services, Inc, (Kennedy Space Center Visitor's Complex) and YMCA of Titusville, to provide quality after-school services for students and support for parents of children who attend three elementary schools: Coquina Elementary, Riverview Elementary and South Lake Elementary.

Using funds from this project, Coquina, Riverview, and South Lake Elementary Schools will become 21st Century Community Learning Centers. The "Space Explorers" program is designed to use classrooms at Kennedy Space Center for science and math lessons (STEM) with bus transportation costs and tuition scholarships for eligible students provided by the grant funds. The YMCA, addressing childhood obesity, will bring a health, nutrition and exercise program into the schools as part of the grant.

Copies of the application for renewal of funds will be located in the Adult and Community Education Director's office and the Adult Education grant office at North Area Adult Education Center.

  • The deadline for applications is April 25, 2008, therefore, the application has been submitted in advance of board consent.
  • Funds from 21st Century Community Learning Center grants can not be used for food. It is a requirement of the grant that participating students be provided a USDA snack each day. School Age Child Care will provide funds to support the costs of USDA snacks and beverages for participating students and any other services, materials, and supplies not covered by the grant. Not to exceed our in-kind contribution of $30,000.00 within the fiscal year.
