Agenda Item #42

Title
Information Related to Voter Referendum on Sales Surtax

Discussion
In preparation for the upcoming Sales Surtax Referendum, the purpose of this agenda item is to request School Board discussion of the official ballot language.

The final official ballot language must be received by the Supervisor of Elections by August 18, 2014, but no later than August 27, 2014, in order to be placed on the November 4, 2014 ballot.  Upon School Board approval, the official ballot language will be sent to the Brevard County Commission, who will in turn forward it to the Supervisor of Elections.

Per section 101.161(1), Florida Statutes in reference to the ballot language:

  • The title is limited to 15 words
  • The actual language of the referendum is limited to 75 words
Specific items to be discussed should include, but not limited to the following:

1. Citizen Oversight Committee
2. Prioritized list of projects
3. Number of years for the surtax
4. Involvement of wording such as:
            Critical facility renewal
            Technology

The attached list provides ballot language used by other agencies that might prove beneficial in the Board's discussion.

As a point of information, the entire resolution must be printed in the newspaper twice.  We estimate that it will take a 1/2 page each time at a total estimated cost of $2,036.  A copy of the Resolution from 2012 is also attached.
